Question about the Canon SX60 HS

So I’ve had this camera for a few years now, it’s great and I’m satisfied with the image quality. However the one thing that always frustrates me is the video quality. It’s supposedly full hd, but everytime I try to take a video, it spits out something that doesn’t even look like 720p. I don’t understand why, I’ve set up all of the settings correctly and everything, and I always end up with poor quality. I looked up video samples on Youtube and even those looked better than what I was getting, and those have been through YouTube compression. No matter what I do, I get the same results. Is there something I’m doing wrong?

Are you shooting in daylight outdoors or indoors with artificial lighting? Hand holding the camera or tripod mounted? If tripod mounted you might try turning off any Image Stabilization. Are you shooting in the higher ISO ranges?

Full 1080 HD allows you to shoot at either 30 fps or 60 fps. Try shooting the same type of scene at both frame rates. If the camera has some special effects filters available for shooting video be sure to turn them off, at least for testing purposes.

If possible post a link to a short sample of the video in question.

In looking at the manual, it's not obvious if video is using the full sensor or a cropped area.  And then if oversampling is being used.

Welcome to marketing.  Megapixels on sensors do not equate with megapixels on displays.   And even fairly recent dedicated Canon camcorders would have "Full HD" sensors, yet they produced aliased footage.  Coupled with 8-bit 4:2:0 subsampling, you don't end up with much information to work with.

Whereas take the Canon Vixia HF G50 that will provide oversampled HD.  These leads to much higher details as compared to the earlier G40, G30 etc units.
