PowerShot SX740 HS images too big for email

Gurba

I was a long time user of a SX700HS camera. I had to update to a SX740HS.

On my old camera when I used to auto setting I was able to take the card out and use with computer and send photos directly using Gmail. The photo sizes were usually under 200KB. Now the photos are in the range of 1500-3500KB.

The photos are usually of just houses, or street scenes or  family photos people. I am using the auto setting on the new camera and picked the (S) image quality, which is the lowest setting. And the are still over 1500KB.

Am I missing a setting. I just need photos of houses for real estate and family photos to email and do not need High res. photos.

Please any suggestions.

Chances are that the default maximum size on your new camera is greater than the old camera. To set it:

Untitled.jpg

L Blocky will get you the same number of pixels with more compression

M Smooth will get you fewer pixels with much finer compression.

Try both.

There is often a file size / quality tradeoff.

If one tells the camera to save highest quality JPG, then on the computer in Canon DPP software (free download) one may reduce the image size when saving and reduce the JPG quality.

Version 3 of Gimp free software has a new JPEG compression algorithm which can create much smaller file sizes than the camera at the same quality setting.
