How do you unlock the memery card on a Canon SX170 camera?

Are you talking about the camera SD card? There is a little switch on the SD card. If the card is locked move the switch to the other position.

Thats right its the switch on the card the cameras do not in a sense read if the card's switch is locked, the card tells the camera via the contacts on the card.

If the switch does not cure it try another card.
