There are a few things you can try that have worked or me with this camera when auto focus will not lock in,
Switch to "P" mode and shift the focus bracket to an area on the subject with more detail to lock the focus on
Manual focus
Tripod with self timed exposure or a corded/cordless remote shutter switch since the slightest movement will blur the image
A small variable light source to light up the image, bring out the detail and color to lock focus on. When the lens is that close the light can become limited nd a small light source will help.
Any one of those or combination should work for focus.

If you have AF frame set to Tracking AF then Macro is automatically available and selectable for the other two options.
(Flexizone and Face detect.)

Thanks Veteran, thats a good point to know !. I just noticed how it automatically shifts the focus square to better areas when in Tracking AF. I would imagine that would eliminate the need to manually shift the zone in many cases.
Lots to learn with this camera!
