Canon G16

Can anybody tell why my Powershot G16 shuts off automatically on video mode after 16 min EVEN if I have selected the option NOT TO POWER OFF? It is really bothering to have a camera with thousands of gadgets (that you never use) and simple things do not work. Battery is full, so that is not the reason. The 212 page manual is not very helpful.

Thanks much for spending your time on this conversation. Maybe I'm just venting my frustration. I wish people from Canon would listen to these conversations. Not sure they do...

Glad to help. Its not a Canon issue. Its a function of the FAT32 file system, which is what the SD and SDHC cards use. Some cameras will restart a second 4GB clip automatically; the G16 doesn't have that capability.

There are also limitations that are put on the camera to keep it from being taxed as a video camera. The tax laws can vary from one country to another, but the shut off times listed previously are true for all the manufacturer's. If they allowed the camera to shoot longer, than the import tax would increase the price of the camera, so to avoid this, they set the limits just under the time allotments for video camera standards.

Interesting, I didn't know that, but they could and should explain... They always put the limitations in small characters (like an insurance policy).
