imagePROGRAF w8400 won't print black ink

I had no issues on my w8400 until it all of a sudden started reducing the black ink ouput until it finally diappeared all together. Currently, when I run a test print I can get all other 5 colors to print perfectly when testing except for black. I've tried head cleanings, changing black ink type, etc. to no avail. My question is how to determine whether or not a head replacement will solve the problem. I really don't want to spend $600 to replace a head and not fix the issue. Any advice would be very helpful!
