My trusty D480 has suddenly started misbehaving. It is directly connected via USB to my Mac mini. The behavior is that it will print a one page document but anything longer than that causes it to pause for 20 seconds then gives 3 beeps and displays a message, "data error". I've tried all the usual checks to no avail. Unplug power, unplug USB from both ends. Totally repeatable. About 2 weeks ago I had a marathon session with a very savvy tech at Apple trying to be able to print from a MacBook via our local network. We reloaded the printer driver with no success. The other strange behavior is when I unplug from wall outlet and replug, it will print a one page document one time. If I try to subsequently print the same one page, it just sits there with no response. Then if I try printing a multi page document, the same 20 second wait followed by 3 beeps.

Hi rondans!
Thanks for letting us know what Canon product you've got. The imageCLASS D480 is an older model which we have retired. While that means that Canon USA no longer offers direct support for it, your friends here in the Canon Community are welcome to offer suggestions!
You can also speak with a Canon Upgrade Program specialist to help you score a modern replacement that would meet your current needs at a discount. You can reach them weekdays and Saturdays at 1-866-443-8002.
Hope this helps!
