I'm trying to install my ImageClass MF455dw All-in-One Wireless Laser Printer to use with my computer that has Windows 11 Pro. It prints fine, but the scanner doesn't work.
Since I'm pretty much a computer idiot, and don't know what's relevant, I'm simply going to recite everything I did during setup today. Apologies in advance if that makes this message longer than it could be.
The only issues I encountered during setup were that there was nothing in the Setup Guide nor in anything that popped up during installation to tell me which printer driver to select, and there was never a selection for a scanner driver. Whether the printer drivers are relevant to the present issue, and whether a scanner driver is required, are things that are beyond my knowledge.
During setup I was given a choice of installing one or more printer drivers. With no instructions regarding which one to chose, I installed all of them. A pop-up then appeared for setting the default printer. All three drivers were listed: MF450 Series UFR II, MF450 Series PCL6 and MF450 Series PS3. I picked the first one, for no other reason than that it was first. At the very end of setup, I then had the option to do test prints using any or all of the drivers. I selected all three, and three test pages printed out with no problem. Printing now works fine, whether by command from the computer or by using the operation panel on the printer itself.
I then tried to scan something, without success. It produced a pop-up stating that "MF Scan Utility that is supported by the scanner you are using may not be installed on your computer." I had no idea whether such a thing was installed or not, since all I could do was use the disc that came with the product, and simply let the setup process do whatever it was designed to do. But searching the computer I couldn't find such a utility, so I went to the Canon website, where the chatbot led me to several videos, one of which was for YouTube instructions on how to find, download and install the utility for my model.
I downloaded the utility and installed it. Scan still didn't work. Trying to scan using the operation panel produced a pop-up saying "Cannot communicate with the scanner. The cable may be disconnected, or the scanner may be turned off. Check the scanner status and try again. Scanner driver will be terminated."
The message doesn't make sense to me, because it mentions only two possible reasons for the failure, neither of which applies for obvious reasons. The all-in-one already "knows" that I'm not using a cable, for I set it up to work through my router instead of a cable. Indeed, the printer prints despite the lack of a cable. Also, the machine obviously had to be turned on in order for me to try scanning by using the operation panel.
As for the instruction to "check the scanner status," I don't know what that means. To be sure, when I tap the Home button in the operation panel, "Status Monitor" appears in the lower right corner. Tapping that produces a menu in which several things are listed, but the only likely candidate is Device Information. Tapping that doesn't produce anything related to the scanner. (The choices are Paper Information, Cartridge Information, Check Counter, Secure Print Memory Usage, Version Information and Serial Number.) If I tap "Scan" before I tap "Status Monitor," I get the same information, with nothing relating to a scanner.
One other thing, which may or may not be relevant. In the utility's interface, under the heading "Scanner," there's a drop-down list in which a "Model 450 ser_200B749F2426" scanner is listed. There are no other choices. Now, perhaps that listing automatically appears there simply because the utility is, after all, a scanner utility designed to work with that model number. But for all I know, the appearance of the model number in the drop-down list may mean that the utility is actually detecting the scanner in some fashion. I have no idea.
Beyond the foregoing, I haven't a clue, and would appreciate any help anyone can give me to get the scanner working.
Thanks.
