PIXMA MX490 series. Cannot access the menu on the printer. The light is on. No menu shown.

I have the Canon PIXMA MX490 series printer. 

Recently it will not function. The power light is on but I have no access to the menu(it does not show up). The only way I can power it down is by unplugging it.

Can anyone shed some light on this, please?
