MAXIFY GX4020 How to connect an answering machine

I am trying to connect a 1740 Digital answering system to a Canon GX4020 printer/fax.  Not sure what to set with Manual/auto switch and User-friendly RX to allow sharing of voice and fax on my single AT&T land line.  How should the answering machine be configured, as well.  I assume that TEL priority mode is what I should be using.

When using an answering machine with the GX4020, you can use the TEL priority mode. You can connect the answering machine to the phone jack on the back of the printer marked EXT. Under the advanced settings for Tel Priority mode, you can turn on the option for User-friendly RX.
