Good evening everyone. I hope everyone's weekend started out well.
I am having an issue with the printer model listed in the subject. It's an issue with paper detection, I think. So recently, the printer stopped detecting when paper is in the tray. Namely, it will not detect a "fresh" load. For instance, if I undock Tray 1 and load paper into it, and then insert it back into the printer, the printer will not detect the paper in the tray (or it may not be detecting the tray itself, I'm unsure). It will constantly give me the "load paper" error. The only way to fix this issue is to power cycle the printer by directly unplugging it from the wall outlet for a minute or so and then plugging it back in (keep in mind, just powering it off with the power button will not work, it must be unplugged from the outlet while still on). I have tried everything else (all cleaning maintenance, paper settings, factory reset, windows updates and printer firmware updates, different types of paper, etc.) and nothing but power cycling will get the machine to detect the paper (or tray) again. It really is a pain and I am hoping I can get some help here. Thank you so much in advance.

Same here. It works on mine with paper set to paper #2 (21lb)

I have a mf634cdw, after trying everything given above, I pulled out the multi-function tray on top of the draw, and discovered a small piece of paper was in there. When I removed that paper and pushed both trays back in the "load paper" error on the computer went away. Also, on the UI the "tray empty" message also went away.

Thanks for taking the time to post this simple fix to a painfully obscure issue.

THANK YOU, your solution worked, and this has just been driving me crazy. A printer god you are!! (something a tech Yoda would proclaim).

SAME ISSUE FAST RESOLUTION ***UPDATE*** WORKED RIGHT AWAY.
I read all the posts and nothing worked - I tended to agree that the issue was a driver or a recent Windows 11 update but what made it more complicated was that it did start when I ran out of paper for the first time since purchasing and using the printer. Unplugging it for 2 minutes then powering back on did NOT work either. So, I deleted the most recent Windows update and rebooted - that did NOT work either.
I considered what someone else said about driver for wireless, which makes no sense to me what so ever other than software engineers love to mess good working things up. I regress!
The fix? I'm connected via wireless - I went to printers and removed the printer then added it again. Windows created a copy of the printer, now (copy 1) under devices. I created a Word document to test and selected the Canon copy 1 printer and the darn thing didn't hesitate at all - printed great.
So, if I had taken this in for repair it would have been a wasted trip when I fixed it myself simply by having Windows remove it and add it again. Don't know what in the driver is causing this and will test it by taking all but a page or two of paper out of the tray, let it run out and load more paper to see if the problem comes back. It's not a hardware sensor issue, it's a software flag being set in Windows possibly.
***FINAL UPDATE***
I removed all except one piece of paper and then sent a print job to the printer (two copies). Sure enough, the printer recognized it was out of paper and the amber LED came up and the display took me to the paper tray menu. I opened up the tray and loaded paper, pressed cancel the print job and the printer took off on it's own and continued with the print job. All is well in this RABBIT HOLE.
Thanks driver writers for not understanding how the hardware works - left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing many times.
