How can I rerun the printer color adjustment that was offered when I first set up the machine? When it asked to place the colored sheet on the glass plate, I placed the sheet upside down (colors away from glass). I think this may be responsible for the grey rather than black text. Do I have to reset to factory defaults? I found the printer color adjustments to be more complicated and have had no success darkening the text. Does Canon have paid service support like Apple?

Sounds like you are putting your originals in the scanner wrong-side up. The side you are scanning goes AGAINST the glass. Otherwise, you are scanning through the paper, which makes no sense at all.
