My Cannon Camera is saying "Memory Card Locked" what does that mean? and how do I unblock it?

My cannon camera says "Memory Card Locked"  what does that mean and how do I fix it?

It means the thingy on your SD card is down. Pull it up again.

If it is already at the top something may be broken instead.

My 5D3 has been showing that message occasionally, and the thingy is already at the top. The card is a 32 GB Lexar Professional, so it should be OK. I wonder if there's a race condition that ought to get a firmware fix.
