Astrophotography lens advice for Arizona/Utah trip

das998

I am planning a trip to Arizona/Utah area later this year.

We're visiting Death Valley, Grand Canyon, Horseshoe bend, Antelope canyon and Bruce canyon.

I have the R10 along with a sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and RF 100-400mm.

We're going to death valley on a new moon day so I'm going to try my hand at astrophotography. Along with that, I am concerned with my widest being 18mm for things like the slot canyon or horseshoe bend.

I am looking to buy or rent a lens for this trip to try it out and am confused which I should get. I assume an ultra wide would be the one to get next?

Any suggestions on this?

Greetings,

No doubt the 10-18 will be a great match for your R10.  It will do great for landscapes and wide angle panoramas.  The FOV on the 10-18 is about 107°.  The FOV on your sigma is about 73°.  You'll probably have to rely on your Sigma 18-50 f2.8 for any Astro.  A tripod and shutter release would be best for moon, constellations and stars.

Also wanted to add if you are looking for a dedicated Astro lens, Samyang makes a 12 mm f2.0 for RF-S.  It's $450.  I didn't see it on LensRentals however.  I had a Rokinon 12 mm f2.8 that I used on my 6D mkII. No issues with build, optical quality or performance.  The samyang also has AF and is weather sealed.  It's one option, readily available and is popular for Astro.
