A feature request. I like converting to dng simply because the xmp file gets embedded into the dng. Why can you set up the camera raw files to also embed the xmp files inside the raw files like dng does?
Also, I would like to see a feature included on the camera that if using a gray card to set exposure, you can zoom in on the graybeard during playback and the histogram updates in real time...like some nikons do.

Raw files shouldn't be touched. Use a sidecar file or a local database. There is a thread at Exiftool about Nikon and what happend when Nikon touched its users' raw files during import. First page at Exiftool:
" Utility to fix Nikon NEF images corrupted by Nikon software"

What do mean raw files shouldn’t be touched?

Don't use any program that modifies the original raw files for any reason, including “harmless” sidecar embedding.

Well, they're not going to implement these niche features no one cares about, but you can go to usa.canon.com and scroll to the bottom and click on feedback.

The raw file for some Canon cameras does contain some XMP metadata. If your camera has a menu for IPTC data, then some of that goes into the XMP section.
If one saves an edited CR2 file from Canon DPP software, then a record of the edits will be saved into a CanonVRD section of the metadata. This is the same information that would be saved to a dr4 recipe file. (I think that the recipe file is a better place for it and I always keep an unmodified copy of the raw file.)
It has been many years since I have used any Adobe software and I do not know about Nikon features. I would not like to see data specific to Adobe software in the raw file. I do not care what Adobe puts into their DNG files.
Rawtherapee will save edit information in an XMP file, but not alter the raw file.
