I submit photos to publications and was wanting to draw on the advice of the community. Do you professionals copyright your photos? I know that publications claim first rights, etc. Looking at Writer's Market defines the different types.Your advice is most appreciated.

Unless you would explicitly execute a copyright transfer, you the photographer would own the copyrights for all images taken.   I believe what you're describing deals with licensing.  i.e. contracts are set up such that a certain publisher has exclusive rights, first rights, etc.

Note: not a lawyer, so for specific issues with copyright law or contracts, best to consult with one.

It would seem as Ricky states, I own the copyrights for photos I take. However, the right(s) passes to the publication who claims serial rights, first rights, etc. I belong to a photography group which has a number of professional photographers. I'll ask the question at the next meeting.
