Canon MP27D Printing Calculator is Printing Random Numbers All Across Tape

When the ribbon ran out it started printing number 9's all the way across the tape and it is still doing this even after I changed the ribbon. It prints the numbers I enter as well but fills in the line with 9's to print from edge to edge.  Even when I press the paper feed, it advances, but also prints a string of number all the way across the tape.
