When reviewing some footage I recorded on my Canon C70 I noticed that the highlights were being clipped at 85%. After some research I found a Canon white paper stating that clog2 has a maximum dynamic range of 6400%, but it is deliberately capped at 1600% for in-camera recording. The paper explains that the reason for this is that, "The look has a two-stop push development margin so that recordings can be used without the signal being clipped when RAW recordings are pushed during Canon Log 2 development or when Canon Log 2 recordings are push processed during color grading."(pp. 8). It seems strange to me that Canon is clipping this highlight information when in post it is very easy to pull highlights down during color grading. I wonder if it will be possible in the future for Canon to unlock the full dynamic range of clog2 for in-camera recording.
