Which camera would best fit me? Please help - Sports photography camera recos

Hello, I am new here.  I have been taking pictures for a couple of years now.  I have used the Canon Rebel T6 and T7.  I mostly take pictures of fast-moving sports.  I am not a professional photographer, and I have never taken any classes.  I just enjoy crisp, clear pictures of my children and family that look professional and amazing.  I have never charged money for any images I have ever taken; I just love pretty pictures.  In 2024 I purchased a lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM Lens.  This is the only camera equipment I currently own.

Now it is time for me to purchase a camera of my own and I am wondering if someone can give me some advice on what would serve me best.

Thank you,

Nicole

I would pair that lens with the R7 since you say you are mostly interested in sports.

Have you thought about looking into the EOS R series? Canon along with other camera manufacturers have discontinued DSLR cameras and lenses. Canon has moved on to Mirrorless cameras with the RF Mount. EF lenses can be adapted to the EOS R series. But stick with the Canon brand adapter. 3rd Party adapters cause all sorts of problems. What is your budget and do you own any other lenses. Do you want to stay with APS-C or move to Full Frame.

welcome to our Community!

well, as far as the lens you've already got, that is a very nice and capable, professional-grade lens! I was in a similar situation a few years ago: shooting sports events in school with an 8-mp 20D that is capable of 4-5 frames per second continuous shooting  (i think) and an EFS 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS telephoto lens. that was bare-bones basic combo i got and it did not fail me to achieve and successfully completed my project.

if i were in your situation now, a starter budget on hand, and kids-sports project to deal with, i'm gonna go with the 7D either iterations 1 (18mp) or 2 (20mp) depending on how much money i got to spend. the 18mp version can go 8 frames per second continuous shooting ( i forgot ver. 2 shooting speed) and is more than adequate for the job. i could save the extra money to buy the appropriate battery grip because high-speed shooting requires a lot of spare batteries on site. plus, it is also a good camera body for bird or wildlife photography should you explore other subjects in the future.  you can't go wrong with the lens you already have because that is darn fast!  good luck and you've got this!

Thank you for responding, I will look into this camera! I really appreciate it!

After doing some research on both I believe the APS-C would best suit me now at this time.

You already own a great lens that can support newer features found in the EOS R series. I would get the Canon brand mount adapter and keep using it. The EOS R7 would be a great combo with that lens. Or you could look into the EOS R10. But for what you’re shooting the EOS R7 would be the best choice.

Canon APS-C cameras are very good. you made a wise choice. with your 79-200 f2.8, that’s gonna be incredible combo! good luck and have fun!
