Which 100-400 lens for my Rebel SL1

GJR1

I would like to purchase a used 100-400 mm Canon lens for my Rebel SL1 and my research appears  to show more than one different 100-400 lens, not surprising given the age of my camera. Which one should I be looking for and any specific tips would be greatly appreciated to this somewhat novice photographer, thank you

Thank you for the suggestions - It's going to be either the Canon or the Tamron

Sigma and Tamron make APS-C compatible 100-400mm zoom lens.

Canon has the professional level (both in quality and price) 100-400mm V2 lens.

I would recommend that you look into either the Sigma or Tamron lens.

For comparison

If you aren't committed to the 400mm length Canon has a very good 70-300mm lens.

Thank you for your suggestion John. At this point, early in my quest, I'm looking for suggestions on the right Canon lens fit for my camera, in used condition, because of price considerations. If I knew a little more of what Canon lens would be a good choice then I could compare prices etc. with the other brands.

You didn’t state a budget, but if it falls within yours the 2nd generation Canon would be the best (EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM). I recently sold mine and it  was a great lens, used it often and also used it with a Canon 1.4x Extender. Took very sharp photos and the AF was super fast. I only sold mine as I got a great deal the Canon RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM and the EF 100-400 became redundant.

For used ones I’d stick to more reputable and preferably Canon authorized dealers. Check out MPB, KEH, B&H, Adorama or some sellers on eBay; many of whom are authorized dealers (but be careful of imported lenses). You can also checkout Canon refurbished lenses on their website as well.

I posted the two Canon options.
