Canon or Epson Printer?

I need to buy another Printer since my Pixma 922 failed me.  I would like to have a printer that will copy, scan and produce good quality photos also.  I occasionally have some of my photos enlarged to 20 x 30, so do i need a high DPI printer, or does it depend more on the camera pixels?  I use a Canon 6D  20 megapixel full frame.

Hi TDKLEX,

If you really want good quality photos you should look at a professional printer from Canon or Epson.  There are reviews on the internet for both printers.  The small printers that do everything are not as good as for images as the ones set up just for printing pictures. For big enlargements, you need a good software program, like Photoshop, Photoshop Elments or something similar. Hope this helps.

If photo quality is a priority, both Canon and Epson offer excellent options, but I'd give Canon a slight edge for natural color reproduction and photo printing. Since you're coming from a PIXMA 922, you'll likely find Canon's newer PIXMA or MegaTank models familiar and capable of producing outstanding photo prints while also handling scanning and copying tasks.

As for 20" x 30" enlargements, the camera's resolution plays a bigger role than the printer's advertised DPI. Your Canon 6D's 20MP full-frame sensor is capable of producing very good 20" x 30" prints, especially when viewed from a normal distance. Printer DPI specifications mainly describe how the printer places ink on paper and are less important than the quality of the original image file.

If you print photos regularly:

  • Canon PIXMA models are known for vibrant colors and excellent photo output.

  • Epson EcoTank Photo printers offer superb image quality and significantly lower ink costs over time.

My recommendation would be:

  • Choose Canon if your main goal is the best-looking photos and you don't print in very high volumes.

  • Choose an Epson EcoTank Photo model if you print frequently and want to save on ink without sacrificing photo quality.

Either way, your Canon 6D has enough resolution to create impressive 20" x 30" enlargements, provided the image is well exposed, properly edited, and printed on quality photo paper.
