Best Affordable upgrade from a Rebel T2i?

southearn

I’m a novice photographer recently graduated, and I’ve been stuck using a Rebel T2i as my primary camera. I’ve very much outgrown it, but I’m also a broke college-aged student. Currently, my job has a Canon R7 that I work with regularly and very much enjoy, but is out of my personal budget. Any advice on the best bang-for-my-buck in terms of a body upgrade is appreciated (below 1k ideally). The biggest thing holding me back currently is low-light noise and bad autofocus. This camera would be for growing my freelance work, mostly in portrait and casual travel photography. Thanks in advance!

southearn,

Before people can offer suggestions, two questions must be addressed:

1) Do you want to stay with a DSLR, or do want to upgrade to mirrorless?; and,

2) What's your budget?

Affordable is a catch-all term that is used for cars, houses, yachts, etc. The term is directly tied to one's income. From there, what fits your income or the amount you are willing to spend?

He gave us a budget:

"below 1k ideally"

The problem is we don't know what you mean by "low light" performance. The R7 is regarded as not particularly stellar for that because of the small pixels. Is the R7 you are using acceptable for you?

I would suggest looking at the R10 or R50.

Thank you. I missed that.

I don't know that I could ever recommend an R50 to anyone. It seems like a lot of people were experiencing a broken mode dial with that model. Do you know if Canon ever fixed that problem?

Steve Thomas

Greetings,

The mode dial issue only affected a limited number of body's.  Repair is free through 7/2028

BTW, a good way to compare low light performance are the review by Ken Rockwell. He takes the same detailed image at every ISO. Here are the R10, R50 and R7
