the autofocus on my rebel xsi has started working intermittently.

 I can take 5 or 6 shots then it stops working. this happens in any picture mode or AF mode

First set the camera back to factory defaults.

Next try cleaning the lens contacts and the camera's.

Make sure the AF/MF switch is firmly the AF in place.
