What setting should I use on my Canon EOS Rebel XS 1000D to not blur shots

I cannot get good pictures of action shots in basketball and softball.  Recent basketball shots were blurred and distorted that they were not any good.  I am not asking for anything spectacular but just some pictures that are good enough to keep.  Help me.  I have used the sport mode and sometimes used the P mode.

PLUS you'll need a fast lens for the indoors stuff which also can AF fast.
