USB-C power for R8 isn't working

patrickary

I have two Canon R8s and recently purchased a monitor and a Neewer PS050E V-Mount battery to power the monitor and camera. I have run into an issue where power isn't being delivered to the camera via USB-C. This happens on both camera bodies.

The Neewer will charge via USB-C if the camera is turned off, but when I turn the camera on, it stops delivering power according to the display on the Neewer battery. I have tried multiple 60W USB-C cables, as well as the USB-A port from the Neewer to USB-C. I also tried a different power bank and got no results. Firmware is updated to most recent (1.4). The manual says it should be capable of doing this so I'm confused.

I have seen multiple videos of people with similar setups (including one guy using the same battery and an R8) and cannot figure out why mine aren't working. Does anyone have any insight? And if I can't get it working via USB-C, would a dummy battery to D-TAP be the next best option?

Greetings ,

I'm sure a dummy, battery and DTaP would work, but the USB-C PD option should also work just fine.

I checked the specs on the Neewer and it definitely meets or exceeds power requirements.  45 w 9v, 3 amps.

The only thing that comes to mind is the cable you are using is data and not rated for power delivery?  The setup you have however should work.

I am of a similar view to Rick, change the USB cable, make sure to get one that is USB-C to USB-C and supports at least 100W just to be sure. A USB-A to USB-C cable is not able to transfer the required power.

I changed out the USB-C cable I was using and used a SmallRig 20Gbps 100w USB-C cable and still no joy.

In the off mode, the battery's outputting 5.1V to charge the camera battery in the housing after plugging in. On startup, the battery output changes to 9.1V (battery indicator is white and not gray like I've read it should be if it's running off external) but after an amount of time (which is inconsistent ... sometimes 5 seconds, sometimes a minute) it goes to zero.

After I stop recording and shut the camera off, the battery does not resume outputting any power to the camera ... stays at 0. Power cycling the camera doesn't work either ... I have to unplug and reinsert the USB-C cable to resume power output.

I've tried all this testing with and without my monitor (Viltrox DC-X2) plugged in via USB-A to USB-C, and there has been no issues with it supplying 5V consistently to the monitor through the whole process.

At this point I'm thinking it's an issue with the battery.

Scratch everything I have said. It's the Canon brand battery in the camera that needs to be inserted. That fixes everything. I was able to test with it today finally and that solved everything.

I feel kinda dumb because I wasn't using it in the first place (I didn't know where they were). But leaving everything here so no one else has to suffer as I have suffered.

🤣 We should have asked.  We didn't think you were trying to use PD without a battery installed.  The battery is what completes the circuit.  Good work 👍

Good that you found the solution, though the manual does mention this.

https://cam.start.canon/en/C013/manual/html/UG-10_Reference_0040.html

If you open the caution note at the foot of the page the first bullet point says…

The camera cannot be powered unless a battery pack is in it.

Just to clarify, a battery was in the camera, but it was a third-party brand ... not Canon brand.

Greetings,

I use Watson batteries with USB-C PD all the time.  They work great.
