R6 Mark II version 1.40 firmware ONLY updates using EOS Utility 3; SD card does not work

I just finished updating my R6 Mark II. It was frustrating because I normally use the method of formatting and SD card, adding the new firmware to it, and then using the camera itself to find and install the update. This time, I could not get the camera to "see" the new firmware (.FIR file) on the SD card. After numerous iterations of debug, I ended up just using the EOS Utility 3 application on my Mac (MacBook Pro 14", M2 CPU, 16G RAM, OSX Sonoma 14.6). That worked out, finally. However, I did lose 30 minutes flailing around with SD cards before that.

BTW, if you need to use EOS 3 like I did, it is important to know that all the instructions in the pdf file that comes with the update need to be followed pretty literally. This includes any error messages. The Canon software is pretty touchy. I was getting an error message that "USB connection cannot be used because it is in use by another app" or some such. It was Photos which had launched as soon as the camera was connected. I shut Photos off and then was faced with the gallery screen (where EOS Utility displays photos that are on your camera to select for download and such). I had to kill this to see the main initial screen that has "Camera Settings" as a choice. I had to figure out to close the gallery to see it because the app does not list all the open windows on the "Window" menu item. Also, Canon left "View" pretty useless as well. I'm mentioning this because the app may seem like it is completely not working, but in fact it is just has a super marginal UI - which you know if you are a long time Canon person.

I'm up and running now, so this is just a PSA.

Many thanks- sadly- no it’s an operator error and I am officially a complete idiot. I was trying to update just viewing camera messages in the viewfinder. Problem was after I hit the “update button”, I needed to switch to the rear screen to continue. Once I flipped it out i saw that camera was seeking confirmation of update - all now updated and I am feeling very foolish at the amount of time I wasted with this!!!

Someone posted this to my R6 MKii update thread and I think it’s a different problem. Your issue was appearing to not gett the right filename on the SD card. I had the right file name on the SD card. The camera would not reconfnize the file. The card was initialized before file transfer on the camera. I only had one SD card loaded in the camera.

the only thing that I think may have been at play is that my Apple Mac did something to the file or file directory that didn’t cause an error when loaded in the camera, but did prevent the one file from being loaded.

in any case, EOS 3 did work OK as noted. My issues with the app were all about suggesting some minor UI improvements.

thanks, all.

How many SD cards were in the camera?

Had the same Issue. What I noticed is that when I copied the .fir file over to my card- it changed to a .doc file. I’m not really up to all the IT stuff, but wondered if that is the problem, and, if so, what is causing it. Have never had an issue updating firmware before.

Copying a file should not rename it, nor change the extension type. Try again. Follow the download instructions. If you’re asked to save, decline.

I agree - but I have tried it multiple times- on different cards, and with different card readers- same thing happens. Have sent a message to customer support.

Sounds like a computer operating system issue.
