R5 keeps randomly switching menu options and changing settings on its own

Hi

My R5 keeps changing settings randomly as it goes through the menu on its own all while I am using it.

You can see it jumping and changing settings especially the focus where it moves from the centre to the bottom on its own.  I try to move it back and it migrates back there.  When shooting video I have to turn off auto focus or it will go out of focus as the focus drifts to the bottom of the screen and yes I have it on One Shot AF not Servo.

While shooting it changes exposure and will over expose or just jump to format card and begin the process. I shoot in RAW but discovered recently it keeps changing it to jpeg or RAW and JPEG WHILE I am shooting to only reach home and have a bunch of jpeg and/or RAW and jpeg.

The controls are locked and I have the screen turned in to ensure I am not accidentally touching anything with my face.  The camera right now is useless.  I have also uploaded the latest firmware a few times, reset the camera a few times, removed the lens put it back on.....everything.

Can someone advise?  Thx.

Greetings,

Did you purchase this camera new or used... How old is it?

"Out of control camera".  Unless the camera has some type of hardware defect.  I suspect the cause of this problem is explainable.

Start with this. If you're using any third-party accessories with the camera, remove them.  Third party batteries, battery grip, third-party lenses, third-party flash, etc.  Ensure your memory cards are full size SD or CF Express type B purchased from a reputable source.  They should be formatted in camera before use.

Now perform a factory reset of the camera's main and custom functions.  After the reset you can set the time and date but don't make any other changes or customizations.  Retest with a Canon RF lens attached.  Leave the LCD closed. Just look through the EVF and take some pictures outside (daytime) in automatic mode.

What are the results?

**Edit** - reloading firmware multiple times does absolutely nothing and in fact should not be performed if your camera appears to be malfunctioning.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, appreciated.  The only reason I reloaded the firmware was to ensure the processed worked the first time.  I also wanted to reset the camera and remove the flash as that is not a canon flash to see if that was causing an issue.

The only other accessory (other than the card) is the lens and that is the lens that came with the camera when I bought it brand new.  The full sized SD card, recommended for the camera, was formatted in the camera and the battery is the Canon battery that came with it (all others are the same as well).  Even without the card the camera gives the same trouble.

The camera was seldom used as I used another model a lot more.  I will follow your suggestions and get back to you.  Again many thx.
