Hey guys, I am new to video and taking some baby steps. I have started shooting some video in CLOG 2. I am using Adobe Premiere Pro. It has been suggested to me that the first step is to convert my footage to Rec.709 color space and that this can be done by using an input LUT. I believe I read somewhere in this community that Canon makes this LUT available to us. Can someone please recommend which LUT to use and where to get it? Again, I am new to video and I hope that I am asking the right question. Thank you! Russ

Re this:
... the first step is to convert my footage to Rec.709 color space ...
This is wrong. If you do it this way, then you can make your life easier by having the camera do the conversion for you; that way, the footage you edit is 709 from the get-go. In other words, just set the camera to shoot Rec709. Which, of course, negates the whole concept of log.
If you don't fully understand what Log is for, and how it works, then you don't need it -- make your life easier and turn it off. But if you want the benefit of Log, then you need to do your colour grade BEFORE converting to Rec709.
You can try this for yourself quite easily. Shoot something with, say, really bright highlights, like clouds in the sky. Pull it in to Premiere, add a Lumetri effect to convert to 709, then add another Lumetri effect to pull the levels down. Done that way, with the 709 conversion happening first in the image pipeline, you should see the flat white sky turn into flat grey. Swap the order of the two Lumetris, and the sky should show real detail.
As for which LUT to use, and where to get it, see my reply in this post:

Thank you VERY much Atticus! Noted! As a longtime stills shooter with RAW, I thought I'd give clog 2 a go for its benefits with the shadows and highlights. I have started a paid course on Adobe Premiere Pro (by Bring Your Own Laptop). I'm still in the most basic part of the course. As I gain a little more confidence, I plan to explore both the paths you suggested to see which is best for me long term. Again, thanks so much for the reply. I will check out your link next. Cheers, Russ

You're welcome, and congrats on taking up new learning.
Log is a little confusing sometimes, and I think sometimes people get tangled up in it when they don't need to. But, if you want to explore the benefits it brings, then it certainly does have benefits, and it's really not hard to master once you understand the principles.
I'm actually making a tutorial on log, which will explain all this stuff -- I'm editing right now, but hopefully it'll be done in a week or two.

I enjoy the learning process. I'm in the stage, right now, with video, where I don't even know the right questions to ask. Actually, I might have just taken my first baby step outside of that stage 😂. The way I look at video, I have some very nice gear (R1 & RF100-300) and some wonderful wildlife subjects that I can get close to. Why not! Hety, I might even be able to take some nice videos of our cats. In any event, I just need to not be intimidated and power through this early awkward phase. Thanks again for sharing - it is really appreciated!
I would LOVE to see that TUT Atticus (if there is a way to let me know when it is ready, I would be thrilled)! I am discovering that my stage of learning and my questions are very common. I'm not finding, yet, a lot of resources for people in my stage. It seems like most sources are assuming a level of understanding. Like, what is Rec 709 😂.
Take care, Russ

I would LOVE to see that TUT Atticus .... Like, what is Rec 709 😂.
Well hopefully it will help, because it tackles that very question!
The tutorial is filmed -- at least for A-roll (me talking) and most of the B-roll (illustrations and diagrams etc), so a few weeks of editing and it should be done. I'll be sure to let you know.
