R1 Bugged out mid shoot.

Yesterday evening I had chance to visit a local wheelchair basketball team practice session, something I’ve fancied shooting for a while.

But the problems started mid shoot when my R1 started to Dim the screen quite dramatically.  This wasn’t power saving, the battery was fine, the memory cards were empty and I had all the settings working lovely on my side.  It did this once or twice and I didn’t think much of it until it almost completely dimmed out and while I could still see what was going on no button on the camera would function, even the power switch which failed to torn off the camera.

I ended up taking out the battery for a few seconds and putting it back in again, this solved the problem and away we went again, this time without any issues.

This is obviously a firmware bug somewhere, there was no chance the camera was overheating or being abused.  And I’m just wondering if anyone else has noticed this same behaviour?

Thanks Folks.

"This is obviously a firmware bug".  I don't believe you can say that with certainty at this point (Maybe)?  You need something more conclusive to attribute this to firmware.  Were any accessories attached?  Brand and type of memory cards are?  What lens or lenses are you shooting with?  Is this behavior consistently reproducible?  Is this the only performance related issue you have experienced with the camera?

Can I ask why the make of memory card would stop the power switch working, or why having an accessory attached would do the same?  (Not that I did).  Or why either of these conditions would cause the screen to dim?  Then why if I took the battery out and put it back in again the camera started working properly again?

I don’t disagree there must be an exceptional combination of circumstances that have lead to the problem, but if it’s something that isn’t handled by firmware, surely that’s a firmware problem.

Just for reference the lens was the new 70-200 2.8 z, it’s possible there’s a firmware issue there somewhere confusing the camera.  Still a firmware issue though!
