New out of box R6 Mark 2 dies after choosing Language

Well, my highly anticipated EOS R6 Mark II kit was delivered today from Canon USA. I charged the battery, assembled the camera, turned it on - so far so good. The battery did take a couple hours to fully charge (green indicator). The setup requires 1) choose language, 2) Create Password. After choosing language, the screen goes blank while creating a password. Dead. Start again, “choose language” reappears. Then create password. Then it dies, blank screen, over and over. Do I have an out-of-box brick?

I did buy the care package, but I’m not registering before talking to support. If I register this, I’m afraid they could send me a refurbished camera. No thanks.

Wish me luck,

Support is closed, I’ll contacting them for help tomorrow and update this post. Wish me luck.

Update! But first, I’m new apprentice user and your replies are amazing! Im grateful for this positive feedback, all helpful. You made me an immediate fan of the community.

TaDaa! SUCCESS this morning. I pulled the battery, left it out overnight. Turned the camera on with no battery (to bleed any residual current), and pulled the memory card. Reinstalled the battery, started it this morning and… initial registration went flawlessly. I took my first dozen test shots. Oh my, this is a huge leap from my first EOS Elan, back in the Jurassic.

I successfully updated the firmware, and completed online registration for the kit and care package. A couple dozen more test shots and video transferred to computer opened my eyes to the possibilities. For the past two years, I’ve been producing travel videos using b-roll captured with a Go-Pro and iPhone. I’m now on a path to study, shoot and learn what this camera and I can do together.

Greetings,

While extremely rare, an out of box DOA (anything) is possible.  Based on your description, charging the battery fully, putting the lens on, turning it on and having the screen go black after password entry is not normal.

The menu should have taken you to set date and time after setting a password.  I think there's two ways to approach this.  Contact sales, request a replacement DOA out of box.  1-800-385-2156.  If you want to call support, they are at 1-800-652-2666,  While there's nothing wrong with getting a refurbished product, I get it. You bought new. You want new..  It's a bummer to have to go through this process, but you'll probably never have to do it again.

What's important, don't be discouraged.  I assure you this is not normal.  I've purchased many Canon products in every single one has been perfect right out of the box.  Canon is a great company. They'll make it right, and this will just be a distant memory.  Please update the thread once you make a determination.  We look forward to your participation here.  For asking questions, sharing knowledge, and of course we want to see pictures.  🤩

Definitely reach out to Canon. You paid for an excellent experience and it sounds like your camera and or battery has some issues.

If you had a second battery, I'd wonder whether a different battery would OK i.e. is a bad battery causing a voltage issue that in turn causes the camera to be glitchy.

When I bought my mirrorless Canons, the batteries took about 90 minutes to fully charge. My experience with Canon 35mm autofocus SLRs, DSLRs, and now mirrorless is pretty flawless--with the exception of my sometimes cranky R8, which is very battery sensitive hence my commentary above.

Please let us know how this plays out and we look forward to seeing your photos from this camera in the gallery section once you are made a satisfied customer.
