Need more help setting up triple back button focus on R5

I have received help with this before here, but now I cant figure out what I have done wrong.

I have set up triple back button focus.  I have full zone tracking on the AF On button, a zone on the asterix button.  Both working fine.  And I have the point selection button set to spot. When I push the button, is shows the white square for spot focus, like normal - but it does NOT actually focus.

Here’s how  I set it up - In Customize Buttons I selected the AF point selection button. I understand that I cant do this using Metering and AF start like I did to set zone to the asterix button, so I used the settings in Switch to Registered AF Function instead, then selected detail set and set the AF method to spot.  Seems like it should work, and it does show up as spot focus when I press the button -  but it does not focus.

Help?

I'm back... and I bring screen captures 😎

Your EOS R5 is almost identical to the EOS R6 I have to hand, so I used that to demonstrate the screens. They mostly look the same.

Firstly if you are doing this in a custom mode, then make sure to enable the auto updates for custom modes, even if you then switch it back to disable.

Set the default focus method on the camera in the AF menu

You set this to be what you want to be used when you press the AF point selection button. The screens show examples of both Spot AF (square with small square inside) and 1-point AF single square. You can also change this from the Q screen but know that whatever you choose will be what is used when you press the AF point button since it cannot override this choice.

AF-ON button

From the customise buttons do the following for the AF-ON button. Set to metering + AF start, then press the INFO button to get the details where you choose to override the AF method with face + tracking.

Asterisk / AE-lock button

Now do the AE-lock / asterisk button. Again it needs to be set to metering + AF start, and you also need to then press INOF to get the sub menu where you choose the AF method you want for this button. Here I used the square shaped zone AF.

AF point button

The AF point button also needs to be set for metering and AF start, but there is no INFO to make changes to the AF method. But that is fine, since it will use the spot AF or 1-point AF that you set on the AF menu at the top of this page.

When you are done, you will find all three buttons, AF--ON, AE-lock (asterisk), and AF point are set for metering and AF start like this final screen.

Well Brian - it worked!  My problem was the setting in Detail Set for AF Operation. I had that set on Servo. (Don’t know why it shouldn’t be, but clearing it works!). This has been a long headache on this end and you finally got me there.

I STILL only show single point, even though I have selected spot on all screens.  But I can live with that unless you have a fix.

For now, you have solved my problem - and I thank you!

Lane
