I keep following the recommended steps to connect my new Canon Rebel T6i to my iPhone 6. I have downloaded the Canon Connect app. I have named my device JanCam. Yet, when the camera comes up on the phone and I am told to "operate the camera to establish a connection" it doesn't work and then just tells me The camera is not connected. The WIFI also keeps defaulting back to my home wifi. Puzzled.

Sounds like the camera is confused. Try clearing all settings [this is done in two steps, in two different places in the menus] in your camera and/or temporarily turning off you home Wi-Fi access point(s).
[EDIT] Try this link. Enter your camera's model number, followed by a space, then wait for the menu.
