My EOS Rebel T5i won't respond to my shutter release remote.

I made sure that my camera was set to the self timer/remote mode, and I press the shutter button on the remote and nothing happens. 😞

Yes, I am following all of those steps. However, I am not using that particular remote. I am using the Targus Universal Wireless Remote. It said on the package that it would be compatible with the T5i but now I am not so sure.
