Live view on EOS Rebel T8i while an HDMI is plugged in

I have the Canon EOS Rebel T8i, when I plug in an external monitor the screen on the camera goes off. I would like to have them both on, is this possible? I have gone through the settings and can't find it.

It is not possible with your camera model.  It contains only one set of video output electronics.  When you plug into the HDMI connector the signal is rerouted from the rear display to the HDMI connector.  Some of the advanced camera models contain two sets of video output electronics and are capable of driving the HDMI and the rear screen simultaneously.
