Lens Firmware Updates vs Camera Firmware Updates

Hello, just wanted some guidance about firmware updates on lenses. Question is, do you update the camera R5 firmware before you update the lenses? Or the other way around.  Thank you,

Hello!

It doesn't make a difference what order you install in.

I didn't think it mattered but wanted to be sure. thank you

You are welcome. Better to be safe than sorry 🙂

Generally Newton is right -- it doesn't matter.

However, personally, I would do the camera first.  The camera is responsible for programming the lens, not the other way round, so it's *just* *possible* that the camera firmware could include an update that improves how the lens is updated.  Maybe even avoids a glitch or a lock-up.

So if all else was just a complete toss-up, I would do the camera first.  But in almost all cases, it doesn't matter.

I have tried to load the firmware onto my NEW (never used) SD Extreme Pro. I start with formatting the card in the camera, and when I do, it puts folders on the card; Misc and DCIM. And when I insert the SD card into the camera after loading the firmware, the camera says "Memory card containing firmware is required to update"

I think the issue is that the newly formatted card has those additional folders, and the firmware is not on the root directory.  How do I get the camera to format without the folders showing up?

Hello again!

The camera needs those folders and creates them. Drop the FIR file in the empty space bellow those folders.

If you are using both card slots, remove the CF Express. I've never had to do that on my R5, but some do to get it to work. I suspect it may have something to do with the way they have their slots set up.

Me again!,

I got it done, thanks so much! Having those folders on the SD card didn't matter. (like I thought)

One thing you might do before you do a camera FW update is to see what the FW "fixes". If it is something that you never use or do or not need it won't help at all. Sometimes in the past FW simply added a language for instance. On the other hand if it adds a lens that you use for example by all means do it.
