Is RAW capture possible in Portrait Mode on a EOS 77D (or any Basic Zone mode)?

Hi everyone,

I have a specific question about the Canon EOS 77D that I'm hoping someone can help me clarify.

I understand that to select the RAW file format, I need to use the Creative Zone modes (P, Av, Tv, M). My question is about the automatic Basic Zone modes (Portrait, Landscape, Sports, etc.).

I don't have the camera at hand to test this myself, and while the manual says these modes are "fully automatic," I can't find a definitive statement confirming if the file format is locked.

Anyone that have the camera that can help me test this, or has the answer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I am almost certain that you can specify file save format in any shooting mode.

Axhell,

I just tested it out on my T8i, and yes you can.

Certain older cameras such as my old EOS 40D does NOT allow RAW. When the mode dial is set to the Basic Zone (A+, Sports, Portraits, etc). So I would check your camera manual. Newer and higher end Rebels have this ability.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. This is clarifying a lot.

Based on your answers, my theory is that the EOS 77D could be in that transition period for Canon. It's been confirmed here that older models definitely lock you to JPEG in the Basic Zone, while newer ones seem to allow RAW capture.

This would also explain why I found the user manual so contradictory after reading it. A main summary chart in the manual suggested that 'Image Quality' was a user-selectable setting in the Basic Zone, but a different table showing the Quick Control functions doesn't list it as an option at all.

Because of this, I'm hoping an owner of the exact EOS 77D model could provide a final, hands-on confirmation. It would be great to know for sure if it follows the older or the newer system.

Thanks again for all the help!
