Any time I've downloaded a firmware update I just double clicked on it once the download was complete. That caused the compressed file to open (unzip) into a file with a .fir file extension which is the actual update. From there you either copy it to a memory card as per the pdf instructions or tether the camera to your computer to do the update.

Be sure of what you are doing with a firmware update as you can mess up you camera well if not doing it properly.
If ever in doubt, just send the camera to Canon Repair center for a free sensor courtesy cleaning and they will install the latest firmware for free also. If you are lucky to live near a repair center, all is fee otherwise you need to pay for the shipping only.
