Are you using Canon EOS Utility or are you using something else to control the camera? Also, how much memory does your computer have?

Lets try this.
1. be sure you are using a Canon USB cable or one that you know is a data cable
2. plug in camera and turn on
3. open Image Capture in Applications folder
4. is the camera recognized? If not, does the computer recognize a card reader or other devices plugged into a USB port? If not, see here: http://www.pntbrother.com/macbook-pro-usb-ports-not-working-reading-solution/
5. in the Applications folder you should have a folder labeled EOS Utility
6. in that folder you should have an application EOS Utility and a folder EU2
7. open the EU2 folder and run EOS Utility 2. That will give you the windows to control the camera via EU.
Report back with any results.

Steps 1,2, and 3 are good.
Step 4 The camera is not recognized, but other devices are. The camera is recognized in Lightroom 3.
Step 5 In application folder I have a Canon Utility folder which contains EOS Utility, Image Browser etc.
Step 6 I have no EU2 folder, but I do have WFT E1 through E5 folder which will not open. I get a pop up that says "Utility quit
unexpectedly."
I can open EOS Utility and Camera Control, but when I open Camera Settings/Remote Shooting I get a pop up that says "Out of Memory." I have an empty 8GB card in the camera.
Thank you for your interest and help in this as I am completely stumped.
