EOS rebel T5 - Won't take photos

Hello, this camera was passed down to me from a family member, it’s quite old but I was very excited to use it as I’ve never owned a canon camera before. I bought a new battery and cleared the SD card, it worked fine for the first few days but now it won’t take pictures, I’ve tried all the modes, including the A+ one I have been using for pictures. The only thing it seems to be doing is taking videos which isn’t very useful for me as I wanted to take mainly pictures using this camera. I’ve noticed that the lenses sound is different when it I’m clicking to take a picture compared to when it’s on the menu page. I’m not sure what to do? Please help.

What happens when you try to take a picture?

Nothing, the description of the mode it is in shows up on the camera but no picture shows up. (Like if it is in sports mode, night mode, etc it gives me the description but whenever I try to click a picture it won’t get taken). When I’m clicking the picture I think the lense is only half clicking and when it’s on the description screen it’s clicking all the way (that’s my assumption). I’m sorry if I’m not explaining this right I’m not finding the right words to describe the issue.
