EOS Rebel XTi waits 3-5 seconds to take a pic in Sports mode

So, my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTI has been acting weird. Like just this morning, I was shooting in sports mode and it was perfectly fine. It took the pictures great. Then, now I’m at an event and its taking around 3-5 seconds to take a picture in sports mode. I don’t know what the problem is and I would really appreciate any help!

Is the lens trying to AF at this time or not. What are you trying to take a picture of in sports mode. What sport if sports picture is being taken.
