EOS R8 pre-capture images blurry

Hello,

First time posting here. Had my R8 for 6 months and just have time to try out the pre-capture feature. When using pre-capture mode, the images come out much softer. This is what happens. I use manual focus and set the camera on a tripod. From the viewfinder, I can see that everything is sharp. As soon as I half-press the shutter button, everything in the viewfinder goes soft. I continued, pressed, and examined the images; they were also soft. Does anyone or Canon know what is happening here and how to fix it?  I have tried with all my IS lenses, and the same thing happened.

Using pre-capture sort of implies that you’re capturing action photography, using autofocus. 

If you’re focusing manually, then you’alone are responsible for focus accuracy. Try allowing the camera to focus first. Capture a single image. Turn off AF. Now try to pre-capture.  

Also, when shooting from a tripod, it’s recommended that you disable IS on the lens.  Leaving it enabled can cause sifter images. 

Speaking of lenses, what lens are you using?

I'm gonna ask a stupid question or two and some other things to try out.  You said you "use manual focus".  Does that mean AF is totally off?  Sounds like the camera might be doing some AF activity with the shutter half-pressed.

I am thinking you might want to check your settings in the Gear menu under "Shutter butt half-press" to ensure there's nothing unexpected going on when you half-press.

Also, you can try turning off IS on your lenses since you're on a tripod.  The camera shutter and the IS could be causing some unwanted artifacts, perhaps?  Are you shooting wholly electronic shutter or electronic-first-curtain?

Perhaps try using Camera Connect or a remote - does pre-capture work there?  No experience if there is a "half-press"/pre-capture option there.  So that might be a non-starter of an idea.

Thank you for responding. Figured out what the issue is. I was looking at the extraction preview on the camera. After I extracted the individual images with DPP 4, the images are sharp. 

Regarding using manual focus. I was testing with a fixed subject. I was using a tripod since the R8 does not IBIS.
