EOS R6 Mark II Trouble setting aperture in Av mode

Hi All,

I have an R6 MII and typically shoot in manual mode. I wanted to do some street photos in aperture priority and I am having an issue getting my mapped dial for aperture to actually set the aperture. If I click the aperture setting bar that shows up on the screen first then the dial works but if I just try to use the dial like I would normally in manual or custom it doesn't work. Am I missing some setting somewhere? Any advice would be appreciated.

Canon cameras have used the main dial - the one just behind the shutter button - to control the "main" parameter. This main parameter changes depending on the mode being used. By default in manual exposure the "main" parameter is shutter speed. 

When Tv mode is used the main parameter is shutter speed, and this is controlled by the main dial. The dial on the rear of the camera next to the LCD controls exposure compensation.

When Av mode is used the main parameter is aperture value, and this is controlled by the main dial. The dial on the rear of the camera next to the LCD controls exposure compensation.

When P mode is used, the main parameter is shifting the program selected shutter speed and aperture, and this is controlled by the main dial. The dial on the rear of the camera next to the LCD controls exposure compensation.

The custom setting on the camera to customise the dials subtly changes the text in the header depending on the dial you are changing. 

1st first dial - Main dial - is your chosen setting in M mode, but not in other modes like Tv, Av, P

2nd dial - Quick control dial 2 - assigns your chosen parameter in any mode

3rd dial - Quick control dial 1 - is your chosen setting in M mode, but not in other modes like Tv, Av, P

4th dial - Control ring - assigns your chosen parameter in any mode

In manual the aperture value is set by the quick control dial 1 (on the back of the camera), but in aperture priority exposure mode the aperture is controlled by the main dial next to the shutter button. 

One possibility is to configure the camera using custom dials so that in manual exposure the main dal controls the aperture value, and the quick control dial 1 controls shutter speed. Then when you switch to aperture priority the main dial still controls aperture value, though the quick control dial on the back will now change exposure compensation.

Got it, so in AV my custom dial is overridden by the default main dial? That's not really a problem I need to change since I am not setting other parameters that would be set for that dial. It's just nice to know I am not losing my mind completely here.
