EOS R6 Mark II How to disable USB PD

Urbanjaybird

Is there a way to disable the usb pd for connected usb c devices. I have a shinobi ii monitor that I use and connect with USBc for camera control. The problem is that the battery on the monitor is used ti power the camera as well. When I am using a backup battery this is draining the battery extremely fast. Giving me roughly 20 minutes of operation as opposed to disconnecting the usb, and using as monitor only, I get hours of use.

I would look at changing the USB-C cable that you connect between the two devices. Confusingly USB-C to USB-C cables come in a huge range of capabilities all with the same connector. What you need is a cable that handles data, but not high power. I have some Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4 cables that support 20Gbps or 40Gbps data, but because they also support up to 240W power they charge the camera when it is connected to my MacBook. Swapping to a different USB cable that only supports data, not high power should be the solution. I expect that a relatively basic specification of USB cable would be needed as these only offer limited power transfer which is not enough to allow the camera to charge.

I think this is something to turn off from the monitor, though I don't see how to do that. I suppose they both use generic USB-C chips which automagically negotiate power delivery, so neither camera or monitor have the ability to change the behavior.

Have you talked to Atomos?

I searched the Atomos website and found this comment in the manual's battery settings. So it appears there is no way to stop that from the Atomos itself.

Note: When your Shinobi II is connected to your camera via USB-C, it may supply it with USB PD power (up to 13w) if the camera supports that.

Yeah, I saw that, too.
