EOS R5 Mark II setting up back button focus

I am trying to set up the R5 II with back button focus tracking to the< * >button and fixed focus to the <AF ON> button.  Currently I've only been able to set up these two buttons in the reverse where <AF ON> button does tacking and <*> button does fixed focus spot.  Muscle memory from my R3 makes me want to set up the R5 II like my R 3.

I'm also trying to set up a third button that will allow select sports scenes focus like, soccer, VB, basketball to be activated.  It seems to me that if you select a sports scene you can't set up a fixed back button focus button as well.

Maybe I'm just confused reading the manual?

There are ways to do what you want with the EOS R5 Mark II.

I'm trying to understand the specifics from your description.

When you press and hold the AF-ON button, you want it to do "fixed focus". Is fixed focus meaning that the AF point stays where you set it and doesn't move around the frame with the subject? If so then you need to modify the default settings of the AF-ON button, using the INFO to access the next level of settings. I would suggest you use the INFO button and change the AF area to the 1-point AF with the padlock. The padlock version does not track or detect subjects.

For the <*> button, you want it to track the detected subject. I see this as you can use the AF point more as a guide to point the focus system at a particular subject in the frame and then have the camera focus on that subject, following them even if the move around the frame. Here you assign the same AF and metering start but change it to switch AF method to 1-point AF without padlock.

I made a composite of the menu options for the metering and AF start setting. You need to place a check mark in the first column to change the option, and then move to the right to change what you want to set.

Lastly... the Action Priority function can be assigned to several different buttons on the camera. It's probably best to choose the button you want to use and then see if Action Priority is there.

i recently purchased a R5 Mk 2 and would like some advise to setting up my camera for stills and video using back button focus and the three custom modes, two for stills and one for video (for street and architectural and travel).

Your camera has three custom shooting modes for stills and three more for video. 

Simply work out what you want to use for each of your chosen types of photography and set that on the camera. Then register those settings to the desired custom mode.

I think setting up custom shooting modes is a much simpler solution.
