EOS R5 Mark II Panning AF doesn't stick with firmware 1.1.1

I managed to download the previously pulled firmware and it was awesome on my camera however just upgraded to 1.1.1 and having major problems with my autofocus.  I use BBF.

I mainly shoot birds in flight using the RF 100-500 lens.   The panning does not stick to the subject despite changing the slider to -1, does not lock on in low contrast settings eg pale bird against the sky.  I have never had this problem before and have not changed my BBF settings since getting the camera. Use three BBF buttons for AF and it worked like a dream before 1.1.1.  I use zone 1 but the focus point changes to single point when tracking before stayed as a larger box over the bird.

i have taken back to factory settings and reloaded my individual camera settings to no avail.

Has anyone had a similar problem and how did you resolve.  I am going on holiday in 10 days to photograph wildlife in Spain and upset about camera performance.  Canon support said they had a couple of other people with similar issue, have tested their cameras and nothing wrong found.  I have raised another support ticket but they haven’t got back yet.  Thinking of changing camera system but would not have enough time to get to know before going away.

i have latest firmware on lens, have cleaned contact points.  I am an accomplished amateur photographer so hope it’s not user error but can’t see why only just happening since update.  Ideas welcomed as at the end of my tether.

Hello,
You're not alone—others have reported similar autofocus issues with firmware 1.1.1 on the RF 100-500, especially with BBF and subject tracking in low contrast. Since reverting firmware isn’t officially supported, try enabling “Lens Drive When AF Impossible” and test different AF case settings. If Canon confirms no hardware fault, consider using a custom AF method temporarily. Hopefully Canon addresses this in a future update soon.

Best Regards,
James Patton

Thank you James - I’ve tried manual with -1 to improve stickiness but not sure what you meant re applying AF lens drive.
