The shutter button on my Canon R will not take a photo. I can back button focus, but when I press the shutter nothing happens. Any ideas?

Hi Clarissa, and welcome to the forum:
Have you checked to see if the shutter button has been customized from its default to disable focus, leaving you with BBF, as you indicate.

See #2 below for customizing the camera's buttons. You may want to assign the shutter button half press to focus and metering start. It is in the camera menus:
