Is the lens set to AF also what is the full name of the lens you're using. What mode is the top mode dial set to. When the lens does not focus.

Neither my Canon EFS 17-85 nor my Canon EF 50 1.4 will auto-focus in any mode but A+. I've tried all the other modes. Fully charged battery...all other functions seem to work...

What focus mode are you using outside of A+ Mode. One Shot, AI Servo or AI Focus. What does the camera display. Or does it display MF. What AF points are you using. Does the camera try to AF at all. What's the lighting conditions like and the contrast like between the subjects.

It sounds like your camera is configured for back button AF. If you turn the mode dial to P mode and then press the AF-ON button on the back does the lens focus / move? If it does then you should go to the custom functions menu and reset the custom controls to put control of the AF back on the shutter button.

When a camera is set to A+ the custom control settings are ignored so normal operation with AF on the shutter button works.
