So recently upgraded from 70D to 6D mark II and the windows 10 raw preview in windows 10 explorer doesn't seem to be working? This camera came out July 2017 how long does it usually take for a codec to be released? I have done my fair share of of googling of the issue but there doesn't seem to be any solution other than continuing to shoot raw + jpeg

I had the same problem, and finally found a solution. There is a free raw codec from Microsoft available now which works fine for my 6D MkII. It previews .cr2 files in Windows Explorer. You can find it here:

The "Photos" app is Microsoft's recommended default app for Win 10 RAW and JPG files. I tried it on my system and it does open RAW files from my 2005 1D Mark II and 2018 1DX Mark II but compared to using irfanView as the default image app the Windows native app is noticeably slower. For Windows users I think you will find that irfanView is a much better default app just for browsing using File Explorer or any other time you don't need to do indepth editing. It is far more versatile in the files that it will handle compared to the default Win 10 app and it does far better at handling large files where the Windows Photo app fails badly.
One problem with Windows 10 is it is constantly updating and many times the updates have issues. Believe me there have been well over 100 updates since 2014. It is without a doubt the worst OS Microsoft has ever foisted on the world. My HP Z820 desktop runs the professional edition and on it you can (and I have) blocked updates for 30 days so that I can avoid updates that create issues. If you are running home edition of Win 10 you are pretty much stuck with updates when MS decides to feed them to you. I had to reset my Asus tablet last night after it got bombed by a flawed Win 10 update in late December which disabled several functions and prevented Windows from doing any updates and there is a needed security update so I was forcedd to start over. The problematic Win 10 update even created a flaw that prevented their own recovery methods from working.
I love the way my HP desktop works but I won't be buying anything in the future running Win 10 because it isn't worth the constant problems. I converted my I7 based laptop to Linux in December after getting tired of an OS that has turned from a useful tool into a no-fun hobby.

Thanks, that worked! Only took Microsoft forever to come up with an update. Wow. I basically gave up and started shooting Raw + Jpeg, now I won't have to!
