90% of my work ( pro ) is at home studio tethered using lockport on 5ds to Mac desktop. on location use Macbook and up until recently connected ok with normal 3m usb cable using lockport. now doesnt connect but weirdly connects with the canon usb cable that was supplied but only 1m long and I dont like plugging unplugging into camera itself which was the point of the lockport. anyone have similar experiences ?

My bad. What is a”Lockport”?
Canon cables typically have baluns at either end of the cable. They look like little cylinders near the USB connector. They reduce external noise and interference.
Most cables don’t have them.

a lockport is a metal frame which has a usb that stays fixed into the camera and has full size usb connection so you aren't plugging and unplugging form the camera and eventually breaking the connection inside which has happened twice to me in the past, £350 repair bill.
Use it all the time in the studio with normal everyday 3m usb cable. tried the tehertools £75 cable but stopped working after a few months. As mentioned the laptop tethered no problem but now only works with the canon supplied cable but means unplugging my lockport and inserting the canon cable which isnt ideal

Try a shorter cable. If you are using a Mac, then that could be the problem.

maybe, but it worked with 3m cables for years now decided it doesnt want to?

just in case anyone else having similar problems it turns out it was my old 2010 MacBook Pro. bought a 2014 model and works perfectly now. no idea the old laptop worked before for so long. I only use a laptop when shooting in front of clients such as headshots so they can see them. I transfer to Mac desktop at home which is why I dont buy latest laptop.
