Well you could try reloading the firmware but my guess is that the mode switch is faulty, try rotating the mode switch backwards and forwards through all the positions a few times, it might just be dirty contacts.

I think your only other option is to send it for repair.

Its not firmware so don't waste your time. It does need repair but I don't think Canon services the 50D any longer. You need to call then and ask. Otherwise try Midwest Camera.
